Borno spending on IDPs significantly reduced
Outgoing chairman of the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, Alhaji Grema Terab, said the government has been able to reduce its monthly spending on internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps to N40 million per month.he recalled that at a stage it cost the state government N600 million monthly to take care of the IDPs.terab added that this was achieved as a result of financial prudence put in place and the contribution of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC).
He said contrary to rumour that agency was superintending over the monthly N600 million for IDPs in the state, the fund was all distributed to various ministries and agencies involved in the management of the camps.
"I have never had the prestige of managing N600 million since appointed seven months ago it has been work, work and work even without the formal inauguration of our agency. I was motivated by the need of our people to find succour in the eye of insurgency and outmost suffering," Terab said.
Meanwhile, Terab also revealed that IDPs from four of the 20 local governments captured by insurgents at the peak of the crisis would soon be returned back to their homelands.
"Plans have been concluded for the building of transit camps in Bama, Kukawa, Monguno and Konduga local governments in readiness for the resettlement of those that fled the councils at the peak of the Boko Haram insurgency" he said.
